It is now definite that the Solomon Islands Under 12 and Under 14 Futsal teams will be travelling to Australia to compete in the Australian State Championships this Friday, following a financial intervention by the government.

Prime Minister Hon Manasseh Sogavare has responded positively to a request for a funding assistance of $80,000.00 from the government by the Solomon Islands Sports Coalition to send the two futsal teams for the competition.

Prime Minister Sogavare said the Democratic Coalition for Change Government is pleased to assist such a worthy cause.

“The Democratic Coalition for Change Government which I lead is extremely pleased to assist the Solomon Islands Sports Coalition and the parents of our young Futsal players to send these players to participate in this competition.

“I understand the parents of these young players have worked so hard to pay for their visas, passports and shoes and that the Bible Way Centre Church has paid for their training programmes, APCO has sponsored their uniforms, DJ Graphics has funded their training and travelling kits and that the Solomon Islands Sports Coalition has held a lot of fundraising drives to have them sent over to Australia to participate in this competition.

“When I received the letter from the Manager of the two teams Ms Sandra Bartlett on behalf of the Solomon Islands Sports Coalition, stating that despite all the efforts that it has put into raising enough funds for the participation of the two teams in the Australian competition and the assistance it received from parents and sponsors and were short of $80,000.00, I instantly agreed for the government to chip in the needed money for a worthy cause.

“To the parents and these other sponsors, I salute you for your valuable contributions to these young players. Indeed together we have forged a significant partnership in the development of futsal in Solomon Islands.”

The Prime Minister said Futsal has done Solomon Islands proud on many occasions and urged the Under 12 and Under 14 teams participating in the Australian State Championships to perform to the best of their ability as they represent Solomon Islands.

Meanwhile, a delighted Ms Bartlett thanked Prime Minister Sogavare and his Democratic Coalition for Change Government for their prompt response to the Solomon Islands Sports Coalition request for government assistance.

“I am very pleased that the government has come to the aid of our young futsal players who have trained so hard in preparation for the competition. They are excited to hear of the government intervention and wish to convey their gratitude to the government.”

Ms Bartlett added that,” The government assistance will go a long way in developing futsal in the country.”
