PM SOGAVARE CONFIDENT OF SOLOMON ISLANDS HOSTING THE 2023 PACIFIC GAMES

    Prime Minister Hon Manasseh Sogavare said he is confident that Solomon Islands will win the right tomorrow to host the 2023 Pacific Games.

    Prime Minister, Hon Manasseh Sogavare, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs, Hon Manasseh Maelanga, Minister for Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening, Hon David Tome, Leader of Opposition, Hon Jeremiah Manele and Independent Group MP, Hon Bodo Dettke are in Port Vila, Vanuatu to support the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands bid for Solomon Islands to host the 2023 Pacific Games.

    This evening at a function at Le Lagon, the Solomon Islands delegation promoted the country’s bid with the presentation of Solomon Islands traditional souvenirs including the famous Malaitan Tafuliae (Shell Money) to the other Pacific Islands delegates convening in Port Vila for the 2023 Pacific Games Bid Presentation. The function also included panpipe entertainment by Solomon Islands students at the USP Emalus Campus.

    Speaking after the ceremony, Prime Minister Sogavare said, “ I am confident that we will win our bid to host the 2023 Pacific Games.

    “We have started on a good note with all three factions of Parliament- Government, Opposition and the Independent Group-all here to support the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands to present our bid tomorrow for the 2023 Pacific Games.

    “This is a demonstration of solidarity at the highest political level for a worthy cause and I am looking forward for the presentation of our bid. I am confident that together we can achieve our national objective to bring the 2023 Pacific Games to our shores.”

    The Prime Minister said a good number of the Pacific Games Council member countries have indicated their support for Solomon Islands bid to him at the function and this was very encouraging.

    He added that a good number of sponsorships have also been secured for the hosting of the 2023 Pacific Games in Solomon Islands and this includes the SBD$277-Million funding secured from the Republic of China Government for the construction of a new main stadium.

    Meanwhile, Solomon Islands needs a minimum of 12 votes to win the right to host the 2023 Pacific Games. The Pacific Games Council comprises of 22 member countries including Solomon Islands. The other bid contender for the 2023 Pacific Games is French Polynesia.
