The Government will establish a new Department within the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development (MEHRD) to administer the government’s scholarship programme.

The new department will be called the Solomon Islands Tertiary Education and Skills Division.

Permanent Secretary of MEHRD Dr Franco Rodi said the department will reduce workload at the Ministry and at the same time provide easy access for people to enquire about government scholarships.

The division will be responsible for all the affairs of the country’s Scholarship Programme.

The latest development demonstrates the Ministry’s efforts to make sure a smooth pathway for education development in the country.

The proposed establishment is now in its final stages of preparation and is expected to be submitted to Cabinet for endorsement next year.

The MEHRD and other relevant authorities are currently revising the National Education Act 2014 to improve gaps in the current Act.

The revised Act is expected to be tabled in Parliament early next year.
